Four-stage process:
- Preparation
- Develop link and description text
- Create varying sizes of description

- Perform and record a link popularity check on the client site
- Analysis
- Current Link Analysis
- Perform link popularity searches on Yahoo and Google
- Record website URLs currently linking at least as far down SERPs as page 4 and above
- Competitor Analysis
- Perform competitor link popularity searches on Google and Yahoo
- Record all linking URLs (except for the competitor site itself) from at least the first 3 pages (seed list)
- Repeat for all competitors
- Industry Sites
- Search Google and Yahoo for industry-related terms that would be expected to produce industry sites, as opposed to actual service providers/manufacturers.
- Record all websites found (seed list)
- Qualification
- Go through seed list and add sites which are possible link targets to a target sites list
- Move through seed list and record the contact method to be used (e.g. email/submission)
- Development
- Current Link Optimization
- Move through list of currently linking sites and request for a change to links and descriptions (where necessary via e-mail to the website owner
- Record date of e-mail being sent and link text/description used
- New Link Development
- Move through seed list and contact site owners with link text to request a link
- Follow link building best practices (see linking matters workbook)
- Record date of contact
- Continuous Improvement and Monitoring
- Current Link Optimization Check
- Every month, run through current linking sites and record those links changed
- Contact the site owners of those sites where the links have not changed
- New Link Development Check
- Every month, run through target sites list and record those links added
- Contact the site owners of, or re-submit to, those sites where the links have not added
- Link Popularity Check
- Perform and record a link popularity check on the client site
